Research Targets
1. Characterization of history, stages and dynamics of land use
• Identification of history, stages and dynamics of land use in different time steps (early50s – pre-virgin land campaign, ca. 1990 last stage of the Soviet period; present)
• Identification of land use changes with special consideration of various ownership structures
• Characterization of changes in livestock
• Description of driving forces of land use change
2. Characterization of soil degradation
• Characteristics of soils under natural conditions (steppes and forests)
• Quantification of soil degradation of soils in agricultural use (arable land and pasture ) with natural soils (properties) with regard to ASSOD on farm scale (1: 10.000)
• Characteristics of spatial distribution and dynamics of soil degradation (patterns) on farm scale (1: 10.000)
• Classification of soil degradation types (with regard to ASSOD) on Rayon scale (1:50.000)
• Evaluation of consequences of climate change for (soil) water budgets, under consideration of soil degradation and land use
3. Characterization of soil erosion
• Definition and analysis of (existing) types of soil erosion and their (recent) spatial distribution (patterns)
• Analysis of development and dynamics of typical phenomena of soil erosion (temporal and spatial) with focus on gully-/ovrag – erosion
• Geomorphological analysis of the influence of land use/ land use change and climate/meteorological conditions on the development and dynamics of typical phenomena of soil erosion
4. Characterization of the influence of climate conditions on soil degradation – especially soil erosion – and soil water balance
• Analysis of (recent) climate conditions /dynamics on farm scale and in the forest steppe zone of the Bashkir Republic and its changes
• Evaluation of the changed soil water budgets and dynamics regarding land use and soil degradation in connection with climate/meteorological conditions
• Description of effects of subsurface water and matter flows on Gully-/Ovrag-forming processes in consideration of meteorological conditions and land use
• Evaluation of climate change effects on soil water budgets and dynamics in consideration of land use and soil degradation
5. Characterization of measures against degradation/erosion in the past and present
• Analysis of soil conservation measures in different land use stages (planning, realization)
• Assessment of conservation effects
• Development of management recommendations for sustainable land use and ecosystem rehabilitation
